I just heard from Noelle and unfortunately our paper got a revise and resubmit yet again from the Journal of Marriage and Family. It sounds like a tough set of peer reviewers--to paraphrase Noelle, she may have to open up a vein before this paper is accepted for publication. Of course, I thought the latest revision sounded pretty damn good and Noelle did a good job taking some fairly complex statistical analyses and relating them in more "reader friendly" terms.
Yet they still think (among an assortment of other things) that overarching conceptualization issues exist and a tweak in our analysis is warranted. They consider another revision to be minor and are willing to let us resubmit once more (and by "us" I really mean Noelle... she's been in charge of this paper since I graduated).
I still haven't heard anything back about our religion paper (my thesis that Noelle and I are trying to get published) but it's still too soon to have heard back. I'm just excited that the editor didn't outright deflect it and that it actually went on to peer review.

Goonies Never Say Die
It's becoming hard to live by my favorite childhood mantra when my favorite Wisconsin sports teams seem to be falling in on themselves. The Packers are nothing more than bribers and the Brew Crew have let the Cubbies dominate.
My biggest pet peeve, however, isn't even with the Brewers themselves but with the fact that there are just too many Cubs fans at Miller Park. I know this is how it has always been, but I'm tired of hearing about "Wrigley Field North" on television down here, with the television announcers picking on Brewers fans during all these telecasts. I'm sure the fact that I live in enemy territory only elevates my sensitivity to the matter, but it sure would have been nice to shut those fans up so I didn't thave to constantly hear, "Let's go, Cubbies" being chanted at Miller Park. It's just aggravating.
However, Goonies Never Say Die. There is a lot of baseball left in the season and it only takes a week's worth of bad games for the Cubs to falter and/or the Brewers to get on another hot streak. Hell, maybe Dave Bush will show everyone tomorrow afternoon that he shouldn't be overlooked. But against Rich Harden? I doubt it.
Anyway, that's enough about the issues I carry from identifying too much with hometown sports teams.
I'm almost caught up on loading pictures to my WebShots page. Go check it out, leave some comments, have a good time. If anyone is looking for some new sound, I recommend checking out Miri Ben-Ari--she's got a cool mixture of classical music fused with jazz, R&B, and hip hop going on. It's pretty awesome.
The best thing though? This weekend marks our third annual "camping" excursion. I can't wait for 4pm to roll around Friday so we can jam on out of Illinois and onwards to a weekend full of lust, gluttony, and greed! Give me a holla if you want in on that action.

PS: The new X-Files movie? So incredibly disappointing. It was so disappointing that it made me depressed. Us X-Philes have waited this long and that's what they gave us? Seriously?
Seriously?

Fireworks!
Molly and I went down to Millenium Park Saturday night to watch the fireworks. 'Twas a good night--good food, good drink, good friends...all coupled with that feeling of being tied for first place in the NL Central.
(C'mon, Brewers--channel tonight's loss and kick the crap out of those Cubs tomorrow!)*
Look--pictures!

*I actually have no problem with the Cubs, believe it or not. No, I have a huge problem with the majority of Cubs fans** and their innate tendencies to be assholes. Example: Molly and I are taking a walk yesterday. I'm wearing my Fielder shirt. A car drives passed us, slows down, and begins to heckle me. Is that really necessary? Is that your definition of being a good fan? *sighs*
**I realize not all Cubs fans are assholes. I work with the Cubs' historian. He is a shining example of a good Cubs fan... but I think he may be the exception to the rule...

Borneo or Bust
Last weekend was the 3rd Annual BBE in honor of Molly and Yep's birthdays. It's become a nice tradition to get us Waukesha folk together in July, have a bonfire, play washers, witness classic Yep quirkiness, and partake of the beverage. This year did not disappoint (although the Grovers were very much missed!).

1) Somebody get a broom ready because I'm ready for a sweep!
2) Nose hair. I'm a firm believer--for the sake of those who must look at you--that men should embrace the trimming. At work, however, I am surrounded by a seemingly endless forest. It is gross.
3) While on the topic of work and gross, it should be noted that I am constantly astounded by certain individuals and their behavior in the presence of coworkers. We're talking about a complete disregard for manners concerning burping, farting, and bodily odor here. I mean, how can you work your way up the corporate ladder and not realize you must wear deodorant??? It blows my mind.
4) Sometimes I wish it were legal to shoot paintballs at little children who constantly scream outside your apartment. Also: the parents who "monitor" said children but can't keep them well-behaved.
5) Ditto for little children who run around the stairwell and slam doors.
6) Brett Favre vs. the Packers? Sorry, Brett. You lose.
7) You know, I still haven't finished uploading pictures from Maui on my WebShots. I should get to those.
8) Then I could upload pictures from last weekend's 3rd Annual BBE (Birthday Bash Extravaganza)!
9) Ok, so my opinion on The Dark Knight. Pretty phenomenal. About 20 minutes too long (but what would you cut out?) and the transformation from Harvey Dent into Two-Face was a bit--shall we say--rushed. I understand you can't have an entire movie with a guy flipping a coin but... I don't know... this was the thing that just didn't click for me. I liked Harvey, though. Harvey was good. (And so was that guy who they say was Heath Ledger playing the Joker but they could be lying because he didn't look or sound anything like Heath Ledger... for real). My head hurt when I left the theater. What an intense, intense movie.
9a) I am indifferent when it comes to Katie Holmes vs. Maggie Gyllenhaal but I'm glad they recast for one reason: one particular scene may have encouraged applause from the crowd if Katie Holmes had been in it. Applause would probably be the exact opposite reaction intended.
10) Is it 4pm yet? I really want to go home today.

CC Mania
Maybe--just maybe--all this hype over CC is worth it (ok, I can't lie--I've always been on this particular bandwagon). I never in all my life thought I would witness a pitcher hitting a home run. And then it happens:

Ok, so that's the Milwaukee Journal's picture and not mine. But it's cool. Then he strikes out the last three hitters in the ninth for his first complete game as a Brewer. The fact that Craig Counsell hit a sac fly against good ol' Coco to avoid being swept by the Reds was just icing on the cake.

10 Things I Think I Think
Invoking a little bit of Peter King over at si.com, here are the 10 things I think I think...
1. Despite Team America's claim, I think freedom costs more than a $1.05. Wheeling's Freedom Fest was celebrated with copious amounts of drinking and eating. But the highlight? Meeting what's-his-face from the Verve Pipe (you know, that lead singer guy). Pictures to come later...
2. I think there is a certain length of time you must know a person before you can feel free to rummage through his or her cupboards without permission. Just not sure how long that is.
3. The Brewers better not offer JJ Hardy for CC Sabathia. And they better limit the amount of players in their farm system they are willing to trade. Yes, the future of players like Sheets and Fielder are in question so making a run for the playoffs is the thing to do this year, but giving up too much for a guy who is heading towards free agency makes me nervous all the same.
4. Brian K. Vaughan may just be my favorite comic book writer. Plus, he writes for Lost--so added bonus.
5. As much as this pains me to admit: Hello my name is Kyle, and I watch So You Think You Can Dance on a regular basis.
6. I've rediscovered the joys of the public library and interlibrary loan. Neat!
7. If you have children and work from home I still think your primary identity is a stay-at-home-mom.
8. (Although I'm as guilty as the next person when writing) I hate passive voice.
9. I'm not a fan of organized religion (surprise, huh?). However, I think I can define myself as spiritual.
10. I'm not going to lie--although I can't ever imagine wanting children, I secretly look forward to raising them without a religious upbringing. No baptism, no Sunday school, nada. Let the kid choose what religion he or she wants to be apart of when he or she grows up--that's what I think.

I miss you more than Michael Bay missed the mark,
When he made Pearl Harbor.
I miss you more than that movie missed the point,
And that's an awful lot, girl.
And now, now you've gone away,
And all I'm trying to say,
is: Pearl Harbor sucked... and I miss you.

Victory is Mine!
Huzzah!
I've spent a ridiculous amount of time looking for the Wii Fit as part of MoPo's birthday present and--lo and behold--I finally found one online that was actually in stock! So I purchased the bejesus out of it! Thank you, zoolert!
Bee-Tee-Dub: I say "part of" her birthday present because I'm not one of those types that buys his significant other something that he secretly wants to buy for himself. I'm just partially that guy.
Bee-Tee-Dub, Part Deux: I can't keep secrets very well--especially when said secrets concern stupidly hard to find things--so Molly already knows about this present. Otherwise I wouldn't have blogged about it. Who do you think I am? Gosh!

Randomnicity (07.01.08 Edition)
1. Why didn't I take my camera? Why didn't I take my camera? Jessie came down for a bit last weekend so she and I could go to the (*ahem*) comic book convention in Rosemont. Lots of free stuff! Lots of super-awesome deals (Captain America #25 for six dollars!?!). And LOTS of geek-types dressed as Christian Bale-Batman, Thin Superman, Obese Superman, Thor, Darth Vader, Storm Troopers, and a bajillion X-Men.
Also, Lou Ferrigno was there.
2. Tomorrow marks my one-year anniversary at Nielsen. Crazy, no?
3. Somewhat similarly, it is surprising--and thus unnerving--how much I like programming in SAS. It's challenging and rewarding in a professional, employed, this-is-what-I-do-with-my-life type of way. Wow. That's pretty lame.
4. Frank and Maria are pretty awesome to hang out with. In fact, they're Wheeling-rific!
5. I read the final volume of Y: The Last Man today. Absolutely gutwrenching. This is one comic for non-comic book fans.
6. Wheeling Freedom Fest this weekend! Which am I looking forward to more: top performing acts such as The Verve Pipe & Gin Blossoms or people wearing American flags as shirts and pants? I honestly don't know!
7. Hello, Brewers. Sometimes you make me nervous. One minute you're hot, the next not so much. Then you're hot again. What's up with that?
8. We had to drop a lot of money on Molly's Mitsubishi Lancer last week. Plus, I think I have a ball joint going bad on my Civic. Boo.
9. I'm trying to get back into the habit of reading (and not just comics, mind you). I keep buying all these really interesting looking books (like this one, this one, and this one) but I just can't get into a routine. Maybe that has to do with all the TV on DVD I've been watching (darn you, Netflix!).
10. Maybe I'll skip #10 and go read. Yeah, that sounds good.
